The Beauty Of Change

Early concept exploration for Ford's The Beauty of Change campaign, translating automotive language into the form of a butterfly.
Project Details
In the early stages of production I was invited to explore conceptual directions for the butterfly motif at the centre of Ford's The Beauty of Change campaign. With broad creative freedom, I investigated ways of translating automotive language into organic form: wings constructed from car door panelling, robotic antennae, headlight-inspired eyes, and shifts in scale from macro surface detail down to mechanical micro-structure, blurring the line between machine and organism.
With Dean Robinson's guidance, these explorations helped define the visual territory for the transformation. Billy Stockwell then developed the highly detailed designs that set the final looks, before the project moved into full CG production.

The brief was to make a car become a butterfly and have it feel believable, not just morph one into the other. The exploration looked for the points where engineering already resembles biology: a door panel reading as a wing, a headlight as an eye, the fine machined detail of a mechanism standing in for the structure of an insect. The idea was a credible bridge between machine and living thing, so the transformation felt like one form revealing another
