The screen identity for the 2021 MTV Europe Music Awards in Budapest, a liquid, iridescent visual language built to hold across the whole broadcast.

Project Details

The 2021 MTV Europe Music Awards in Budapest needed a cohesive visual identity that could define the environment across multiple screens and award moments. Show direction was led by Tawbox, with production design by Yellow Studio and creative direction by Aries Moross. Working with Studio Moross, I developed the core visual identity that shaped the show's on-screen content.

The liquid and neon treatments I created formed the foundation of the house look, applied across multiple screen configurations and award moments throughout the ceremony. The same direction ran across the main stage and extended to the MTV World Stage at Heroes' Square, holding a clear visual throughline.

The look was built to flex: across category announcements, nominee reveals and winner moments, transitioning between ambient states and high-impact reveals while staying clear at arena scale and on camera, adapting to the architecture of the stage and LED environments.

Concept

The visual language took its cue from Budapest itself. The liquid, iridescent forms drew on the city's historic bath houses, steam, water and condensation shaping the texture and movement, while the colour palette nodded to the eosin glaze, the iridescent, light-shifting finish pioneered by Hungarian ceramicist Vilmos Zsolnay, whose ceramics are found across Budapest's most iconic buildings. The result was a broadcast identity grounded in its host city.
