Project Details

Portraits are a series of moving-image works by Sin Wai Kin, each one a single character from the artist's ongoing universe, the recurring cast at the heart of their Turner Prize-nominated practice. I was brought onto the project by Rose Pilkington, who led the 3D, to handle editing and post.

My work was on the VFX and finishing side. Editing each piece and building them into seamless loops running over ten minutes, using roto and paint to clean and extend the footage, compositing plates together and creating the reflecting pool in post. I also did some early 3D for The Universe, the character reclining on a tree branch, before Rose took the 3D through to the final films.

Eary Work

Each portrait had to hold as a durational piece, closer to a moving painting than an edit, playing on a long loop with no clear beginning or end. Most of that work is invisible by design: the roto, the paint, the seams of the loop, and the reflecting pool composited in, all there to let each character simply exist in their world without the technique showing.
